NAGPRA

The , enacted in 1990, mandates all federally funded institutions with legal control over Native American Ancestral human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony to repatriate those holdings to Lineal Descendants, Federally Recognized Native American Tribes, and Native Hawaiian Organizations. As an institution meeting these criteria, the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø has both a legal and ethical obligation to act in accordance with NAGPRA regulations outlined in .

UGA’s compliance efforts are overseen by the NAGPRA Committee, operating in conjunction with the Office of Research Integrity & Safety and the Laboratory of Archaeology. This team is committed to safeguarding and ensuring the ethical treatment of all Ancestors and cultural items while they await repatriation, as well as the good-faith discovery process of University holdings that may meet NAGPRA eligibility criteria.
